Thinking about my fitness journey, I remember activity in my life growing up on Spring Street in Southern Illinois.  My neighborhood was filled with kickball, bike rides, hide and seek, tag, and sports. Swimming was especially important to me. I grew up in a small town; we didn’t have an indoor pool, but from the age of 9 I was involved in our summer league swim team. I absolutely loved it and was committed to it from the beginning. I would wake up early and ride my bike to the pool by a cool 7 a.m. and swim for 2 hours. It taught me what discipline, hard work, and accomplishment felt like.

I added other sports as I got older which continued to teach me and mold me, but after high school was over, the options were few. College was about studying and friends. Walking to class and working out every once in awhile just didn’t cut it. Then I was teaching, and that took up most of my energy and time. After giving so much of myself during the day and grading at night, I didn’t want to work out (or it just wasn’t a priority).

Somewhere between school and marriage I think I forgot about myself; the journey got a little more complicated; life was full.  Fast forward 2 degrees, 3 moves, and 5 children later, and I wasn’t really my physical self anymore. My fitness level and my weight had been on somewhat of a roller coaster ride! Up and down; working out, not working out; gaining, losing. I know that you can probably relate. Life gets fast and full, and somehow you look up and you don’t recognize yourself anymore. You wonder where the time has gone! On January 4, 2011, that’s where I was: What happened?

There are several factors that collided on that day (or that were brewing for awhile), and over the next few posts, I hope that I can share those with you. Maybe we’ll have some things in common and maybe we won’t, but it’s good to know that we can learn from each other and be on this journey together.

Hi, my name is Jen; I am “Dr. Dan’s” wife. Around here he is just “honey” or “Dad,” but he’s also been a tremendous supporter of mine. He has seen me go through quite a transformation in the last six months so he has asked me to share with you in this blog. Normally, I am not the kind of person who would want to do that. I’d rather just get to know someone one-on-one, face-to-face, or just mind my own business (honestly), but I felt that this might be part of the process, part of my change, so I decided I would share with you (and give my husband a hand) for awhile. So I am going to just pretend that we are side by side on the ellipticals, cooling down and sharing our stories.

Mine is not a story about the perfect transformation or an Oprah-esque makeover; it’s just a story of a girl gaining some perspective on herself and losing some weight along the way. I hope you’ll hop on and cool down with me over the next few weeks as I share my story with you.

1. I can’t learn to persevere when it comes to exercising if I don’t get up off my rear and go! I have to push through the exhaustion (laziness, boredom, negativity, etc.) and go to the gym. I’ll feel better after I do!

2. Food in itself is not a celebration.

3. Losing weight takes time; slower is better. (Grrrr)

4. This is for me. It’s also about setting a good example for my children and being healthy for my family, but ultimately, this is for me.

5. I can actually do a lot more than I thought (boxing, box jumping, planks, not eating dessert!). I’ve got to keep challenging myself!

1. Just 30 minutes today!
2. You need to rest tomorrow.
3. You can’t deprive yourself from the things you love; everything in moderation.
4. Exercise has to be fun.
5. What do you want to do? It’s your workout.
6. Awesome!
7. You are doing great!
8. I am proud of you.
9. I knew you could meet this challenge.
10. Good job, champ.

1. So let’s do another set of those walking lunges.
2. Let’s see how many you can do in a minute.
3. Let’s see how many you can do in a minute again.
4. Your whining just makes me work you harder.
5. Today’s workout is going to be a little bit more challenging.
6. You need to eat clean.
7. We’re not doing mountain climbers, just modified mountain climbers.
8. You forgot we’re going an hour today?
9. I’ve been having a real Oreo craving lately.
10. O.K. now it’s time for burpees!

1. Grapefruit
2. Spinach, romaine, fresh veggies in general
