What a terrible football game we just watched. The Tennessee Titans had a chance to win this game despite only getting one first down in the first half, but Cam Ward threw a terrible interception to end the game. This offense is just abysmal. It’s not all on Ward, but he was really bad today. The Giants should have picked him off 3 times.

On the last offensive play, Ward has to know the situation. He had plenty of room in front of him. The Titans had two timeouts. There is no reason to try and force a throw there.

What is it about this franchise that makes offensive football so difficult? It’s been a problem through different general managers, different head coaches, and different quarterbacks. Paul Kuharsky talks about the DNA of the franchise. Joe Rexrode makes fun of him for it on Robby and Rexrode all the time. The idea seems ridiculous, but maybe there is something to it.

There are also a lot of game management questions with Robert Saleh. The field goal attempt at the end of the first half in those conditions. The timeout that had to be taken on defense coming out of a Giants timeout. This guy is not a first-year head coach. Those types of things simply cannot happen.

It is hard to watch this team play every week.

Ed Valentine of Big Blue View was nice enough to answer 6 questions about his New York Giants ahead of this week’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans.

1 – How is morale with the news that Jaxson Dart is out for the season?

That depends on whether you are asking about the team or the fanbase. Some in the fanbase have already tossed in the towel on the season. The Giants themselves? As John Harbaugh said on Wednesday, the story of the season has yet to be written, and there are still 15 chapters to go. Players have a job to do, and on Sunday they will be fired up and ready to do it.

2 – What are the early impressions of former Titans DC Dennard Wilson?

I like Wilson. I like the aggressiveness he is trying to bring to the secondary. I think he is a very good defensive coordinator. I am less sure about the hand he has been dealt with the Giants’ defensive personnel.

3 – As you know, the Giants and Titans don’t play very often. Who are some of the under-the-radar players that we should keep an eye out for?

Under-the-radar guys are sort of difficult right now. I will, though, give you a few players to pay attention to.
Offense — Marcus Mbow. If Andrew Thomas can’t go at left tackle (groin/adductor) Mbow will likely be there. He is a second-year swing tackle who did well enough in spot duty last season.
— Defense — I’m watching Abdul Carter and Arvell Reese. Both are top 5 picks in the draft, and I’m waiting for impactful, breakout games from both.
— Special teams — PK Dominic Zvada is a rookie who has a big leg and has been impressive.

4 – If the Giants could steal one player from the Titans’ roster, who would it be and why? (Bonus points if it isn’t Jeffery Simmons, but I’m not sure where else I’d go if I were you)

I love bonus points. Simmons would be the clear choice if I wasn’t playing for the bonus. Great player who would fill a massive need for the Giants on their defensive line.

My “bonus points” choice? I’m taking Carnell Tate. I did not want to see the Giants draft Tate at No. 5, and the Titans made sure that didn’t happen. The Giants, though, need more explosive plays, and they need a big-time wideout to pair with Malik Nabers. Thus, Tate.

5- What’s the biggest matchup in the Titans’ favor and the biggest matchup against their favor?

In the Titans’ favor is probably Jeffrey Simmons against the middle of the Giants’ offensive line. In the Giants’ favor — the fact that John Harbaugh is the head coach and Brian Daboll isn’t.

6 – Who wins this game and why? With the Giants currently listed as 2.5-point favorites, what’s your score prediction?

The Giants win. The Dart loss is a blow, obviously. Thing is, even without Dart I think the Giants are closer to the good team they looked like Week 1 against Dallas than the bad one they looked like in Week 2 against the Rams. I think they play an inspired, determined, physical game and win a close one. Giants 20, Titans 17

What a difference a week makes. We didn’t have a poll question last week asking if you thought the Tennessee Titans would beat the Philadelphia Eagles, but my guess is that if we did, less than 10% would have expected a win. This week, we did ask if you expect the Titans to win, and 63% of you said you do:

It’s hard to say what that percentage would have been if Jaxson Dart wasn’t out for the year, but it’s safe to say it would have been significantly less.

We did ask last week how many of you were confident that the Titans are headed in the right direction. For some reason, 10% said they were. That number jumped way up last week after the Titans nearly pulled off the upset:

I still couldn’t vote yes, but 39% of you did. That number will go way up if they are able to beat the Giants, and it will probably go back down to around 10% if they lose.

It is time for the Tennessee Titans to get the first win of their season. The New York Giants will be without starting quarterback Jaxson Dart after he suffered a season-ending knee injury on Monday night. They could also be without star EDGE rusher Brian Burns. The Titans need to capitalize.

Jameis Winston will get the start for the Giants. Winston is not a bad quarterback, but he does have the propensity to give the ball to the other team. The Titans picked off Jalen Hurts twice last week. If they can do that again, they will have a really good shot.

On offense, they need to build off last week’s momentum. The key there will be the ability to stay balanced. Against the Eagles, they had 29 rushes and 20 passes. They can only do that if they don’t fall behind early and if they stay ahead of the chains.

Cam Ward needs to continue the progress we saw from Week 1 to Week 2. He hasn’t turned the ball over in either of the first two games. Limiting his throws is the best path forward for now. There will come a time when they have to lean on him to win games. The hope is that he is better equipped to do that as he continues to become comfortable in Brian Daboll’s offense.

This is a game the Titans really need to win. They get the benefit of facing a backup quarterback. Winston is a pretty good player, but there is a reason Dart was the starter. They have a tough 3-game stretch coming after this, with games at the Baltimore Ravens, at home against the Houston Texans, and at the Indianapolis Colts. Go take advantage of a beat-up Giants team.

NY Giants’ injury concerns extend beyond Jaxson Dart | Big Blue View

The Giants are banged up beyond belief as they march into just the third game of the season. This should give the Titans a chance to capitalize.

JC Latham has one really tough play on Sunday. It came at a terrible time, as the Tennessee Titans were set up with 1st and goal from the 8-yard line in a 17-17 game with 2:33 left to play. Latham got beat and allowed Cam Ward to get sacked. Former Titans scout Blake Beddingfield wrote at PaulKuharsky.com that the play design was poor there, giving Latham “no options on his block.”

On the whole, Latham has been much improved this season. Check out this graphic from Pro Football Focus:

Latham is consistently winning in pass blocking without the Titans having to give him help. Look, those are the numbers you expect from a guy when you draft him with the 7th overall pick. It took Latham longer to get here than we had hoped, but it finally seems like the Titans have a right tackle they can count on (left tackle is another story).

This gives the Titans two really good young players on the offensive line with Latham and Peter Skoronski. They are going to have to address left tackle sooner rather than later, but in case you didn’t know, it’s a whole lot easier to find one tackle than two. #math

Rookie left guard Fernando Carmona improved from Week 1 to Week 2. If he can develop into a solid player, the Titans might not be as far away from having a good offensive line as we feared at the beginning of the year.
